Ask the Guru: A Sound Question

Please explain the way sound propagates in Quake, and how it can be controlled by level design.

I always thought that sound in quake was basically omnidirectional (if thats a real word), meaning that it originated at a point, and spread out regardless of walls...whats the story? :)
