Junk Mail / Llama of the Day!

I realized today that some people are incapable of understanding the simple fact that I am not employed by any company responsible for Worldcraft, and still feel that I must in some way be responsible for Worldcraft's delay. So, for everyone's enjoyment, I will be posting pieces of negative emails i get from that type of person, with my response to them as well. Today's "Llama of the day" award goes to David.

from me:
>>the only good thing about receiving this negative type of email is it
>>allows me to vent my frustration against the people specifically
>>responsible for it. gee, thanks.

from David:
>And that's exactly what consumers are for, right? If you can't be hostile
>to them, what fun are they? Yes sir, those business courses are certainly
>paying off now. I feel such a blind, passionate patronage to the company
>who appreciates my usership and lends a sympathetic ear to my angst.

and my response:
What can I say to this? Hmm...well, for one thing, I am not employed by any company responsible for Worldcraft. I will not be made a scapegoat for any release problems, and I do not appreciate rude and/or sarcastic email, so I feel no remorse in responding to them in a like fashion.

Wow!

I just want to thank all the people who sent supportive email...its a different side of the editing community that is quite nice to see. The general theme of the mail has been that testing should go "until its done" ... thankfully, it looks like it will be done quite soon. A small update on the beta - it is very stable (ie: it doesnt crash ... considered to be a good quality, so i've been told), and it has a couple options not mentioned in the preliminary artlicle that will make life much easier. I'm not going to be silly enough to give another guess as to the release date, but I feel comfortable now when I say "soon". I hope everyone is impressed and satisfied with the added features.

Facelift

Well, The Forge is in need of some body work. Things are starting to sag and its a little soft in the middle. The new look will be in place as soon as its done, thanks to HydraMedia Corporation. Any design inquiries can be directed to Searis.

Heartbeat of...?

Without a doubt, my favorite brand of car is Chevrolet. I love Chevys. I've been driving chevy products since I fist started driving...I've tried other brands of cars of course, but I'm sticking with Chevy for now. Don't get the wrong impression...I don't work building these cards, nor am I employed by Chevrolet, I just enjoy working on them occasionally as a hobby, and drive them alot.

Now, I have this neighbor, I'll call him Arny. Sometimes i feel like i'd want to Kill Arny. But that's counter-productive. You see, my neighbor, Arny, also likes chevrolets. I'm not sure what his problem is, but he seems quite put off that he can't get this year's model of chevy, which I already have access to. He seems quite mad at Chevrolet actually. So...one day, as i was checking my mail, i find that Arny has dropped in a piece of mail as well. It is quite a rude letter, basically him taking out his frustration on me. Once again, I do not work at Chevrolet. I don't appreciate this letter, and send him one back telling him I care little about how he feels, and he can go step on a tack (or something to that effect).

Welllll...now, perhabs, with his dignity a little hurt, Arny decides "I'm going to fix him!". So...he sends a letter to Chevrolet (where I don't work) telling them I'm a big meanie, and I hurt his feelings. Poor Arny, he's so misguided. Still, what a momo.

It's the 27th and....

...and its not out. Sorry...I was just guessing but I really *did* think it would be out by now. One thing tho...as I have no actual control over the release (or rather, its non-release), emailing me complaining about it is rather useless, and i will reply to all emails received in the same tone they were sent (as some people have found out).

Thank you, please drive through.

Advice

Neal White III sent me some advice which sounds quite useful. Without further ado, here it is.

I'm working on a large CTF outdoor level and I've found some techniques that reduce the BSP file size and improve the visuals of large mountainous maps.

1. Partition your map into sections. I've been using large unclimbable mountains to split my big map into about 5 sections. I also used a sky brush to seal the area above the mountains so that VIS cannot look into an adjacent area. The areas are connected via tunnels and a couple of teleports.

2. Scale your textures. I've been using 2x4 and 3x6 as my scaling factors for my mountains. Use the larger scale for far-away details. This looks better and speeds up LIGHT. The best part is that this reduces the number of "light-map patches", which looks like it will reduce my final BSP file size by at least 250 Kb or so. Game-play seems a bit smoother as well, but the FPS is about the same. I was able to cut 32 Kb just by scaling the ground texture to 1.5 x 1.5.

3. I also rotated the textures by 33 degrees for better-looking mountains.

BTW: All info refers to Quake 1, but should also be relevant to Quake 2. I'll port my map over to Q2 as soon as the new version of WorldCraft is released.

More on the 1.6 release date

Holy cow man! I thought my estimate in the Preliminary Findings: Worldcraft 1.6 article would at least slow down the number of emails i get (and promptly delete) asking when it is going to be released. This is a general response to all that email.

To clarify...the article was written on January 20th (fig. 1), i had no firm idea, just a guess (fig. 2) when the release date would be, but i did guess that it would be within a 7 day period (fig.3) meaning somewhere between the 21st and 27th.

Sorry, had to get that off my chest. Anyways, i'm still sticking by that estimate.

Here's a short article I wrote up to satisfy a bit of people's curiosity about 1.6.

1.6 Nooz

Hmm...if you we're wondering why there's been no new news posted, it was because there was no new news (a simple concept, one would think). However, here's a small update on what's happening with Worldcraft 1.6.

The 1.6 beta should be going to the testers later today. (read: its not in my hands yet). Once distributed, a frenzy of extreme testing will begin (read: we will all start slobbering and working frantically...er...well, more of the latter). Everyone involved would like to see this go public ASAP!

As any mention of the word "beta" seems to result in a ton of email along the lines of "Hey man, I know you get 100's of these emails, but you can let *me* be a beta tester, right????!@#" ... well, no...the beta team is already quite extensive, and it is not up to me to approve new members. However, some of these emails have been quite humourous. :)

If anyone has emailed me requesting information about version 1.6, and I did not respond, please don't take it personally, but there was no news that couldn't already be read at the worldcraft homepage.

Q2ToWad 1.2

Anyone who wants to extract the Quake2 textures to a WAD for use with Worldcraft until version 1.6 has arrived should get this file. Instead of downloading a huge wad file, download this (29kb) file. By Tim Wright, author of arghlight, this util (as of version 1.2) will extract all the textures from the Quake2 PAK file, adding the texture structure as well. Hmm...7mb download compared to a 29kb download...well...its just the right thing to do. :)

1998

Yay, its 1998. Hope you had some good holidays. I had food poisoning. Yay. Whoopee.

Worldcraft 1.6

Hey, its not out! To use one the newer id quotes (if i may do so without incurring their wrath)...it'll be out "Real Soon Now". (This in no way implies that I know of an exact release date, its just my effort to get people to stop asking me about it). If there's any new information, I promise, you'll be the first to know. :)
