Loki : Okay guys..
Loki : It looks like we have SOME sense of order here :)
sCary : frag, that bastard wasnt around friday! he missed out on all the snot.. so i hooked up giggler
Loki : I'm going to start and hope the rest of this works out.
* sCary licks loki
Loki : Okay. :)
ELM-Somberfire : Glad you guys didnt leave :)
levelord : why would we miss all this?
sCary : exactly
Loki : Alright :)
Romero : Who wants a job at Ion Storm? just kidding.
ELM-Somberfire : OKay enough guys...
Loki : heh.
levelord : I do!
ELM-Somberfire : We want to get this happening :)
levelord : I hate THIS place
ParadoX : First person to msg me gets a job at ion
levelord : ...or maybe Garland?
Romero : uh...
Loki : Could you hire me as "general greater of mayhem" ?
Loki : :)
Loki : Mayhem and chaos expert.
ELM-Somberfire : Next one who does that dies..
Loki : Okay... We're going to start. :)
Loki : I think the chaos has died down .
sCary : dont ask me any questions.. i just work here.
Loki : Levelord: We'll start with you :)....
levelord : ouch!
Loki : Levelord: When did you start getting into level editing, and what attracted you to do it ?
ParadoX : levelord: DID YOU DO ONLY ONE LEVEL IN THE SHAREWARE DUKE NUKEM 3D VIDEO GAME?!
levelord : Jan of 1994 doing levels for some game called... ...called... DOOM, I think
levelord : I'm writtin' that one done, pal
giggler : Levelord was actually a janitor at 3drealms.. cmon guys its not funny
levelord : well, that wasn't exactly the job title, but the description is close
Loki : Alright, Giggler.. how about you.. when did you start getting into editing...
ParadoX : Ahhh...Doom - I remember that game...hmmm
levelord : why don't you grab a bite to eat or something paradox
giggler : Loki: I've been editing since Doom, but didn't take it too seriously until Quake began
levelord : ...put something in your mouth!
ParadoX : levelord: gotta keep you guys straight
levelord : blow!
levelord : .... ;)
ParadoX : doh!
Loki : hehe..Alright... Paradox: how about you.... When did you start editing... and what got you into it ?
levelord : he hasn't yet!
ParadoX : loki: I started editing Wolf3d levels back in high school - Then went to doom. It consumed about 50% of my classtime doing sketches and stuff
giggler : I saw some of paradox's doom maps.. that stuff doesn't count ;)
ParadoX : levelord: oh yeah
ParadoX : gig: allright
ParadoX : hehe
giggler : Paradox: just kidding man.. your Doom stuff rocked
Loki : Paradox: Before you started editing professionally... how long did you actually spend perday editing levels ?
ParadoX : loki: I would come home from my real job (sys admin at cray computer) and spend the rest of the night doing Doom maps - usually till 2 or 3am
ELM-Somberfire : jezzzzzz
Loki : Giggler: Well, keeping on the same thread... How long did you spend editing levels.. and what did you do before you found you editing obsession? :)
giggler : Loki: before I was into editing, I was into playing.. I was a Doom fanatic. When I was at school and making quake maps, I would begin after classes at 3 Pm, and finish at about 5 Am while working
ParadoX : Did I say 2am? I meant 6am
giggler : that was for only a couple weeks though :)
levelord : I stayed up until 7am!
ParadoX : I never sleep
levelord : ...and we lived in a box
ELM-Somberfire : :)
levelord : ...on the side of the road
Loki : And Levelord: So... before you got into you're editing obsession... What did you do, and what sort of skills did you develop from that that helped you in your editing career.
giggler : I had to be spoon fed me meals while working
levelord : I was in software, aerospace stuff, and started playing that wicked, evil game DOOM, it was hook city from there on in
levelord : "spoon fed"!?! ...I had to run a cathater to the bathroom and made a special spatula to pry myself from the chair
Loki : Giggler: How do you get the inspiration for most of your levels ?
levelord : from me!
giggler : I've done some different stuff.. sometimes I look at real architecture, or I just play with textures until I find a set that gives me a feeling for a level
giggler : and then there was this one time just as I was leaving the bathroom.. oh nevermind
Loki : Levelord: same for you :) Where do you get your ideas for your levels? :)
levelord : dreams, books, lots of movies
levelord : ...and like Giggler, lots of times "shit happens" on the fly
Loki : Why don't you all just answer this one : An audience question: what sort of music do you listen to
levelord : nails!
levelord : marilyn manson!
levelord : barry manilow
ParadoX : NiN, Metallica, Garbage, Manson, Poe, (Chick bands), No doubt, Jewel, Peppers, lots of stuff
giggler : NiN, lots of alternative. Right now I listen to Garbage a lot.
Romero : I was the first map designer, for what it's worth. :)
giggler : anything but rap or county
ParadoX : Lots of fully orchestrated stuff when doing maps
Loki : Levelord: I'll get your insight on this one: We're all into doing rotating brushes now. We note there's not a LOT of rotating brushes in the levels, they get used only at key points mostly... Why is this?
ParadoX : loki: Overuse is abuse, plan and simple
ParadoX : plan=plain
levelord : rotation was one of the last things we programmed, so there wasn't much time
levelord : there's no "i" in "plan"
levelord : people, that really is the true romero
Loki : Another big questions I've heard alot of : What are the legal implication of us using hipnotics modifications and textures ?
ParadoX : level: There is no "W" in "Team"
levelord : as long as you don't sell anything of ours, I believe it's okay
levelord : ...oh ya, thanks para
giggler : using the hipnotic quakec and textures is the same deal with using the quake stuff
ParadoX : loki: We will personally kill you :)
levelord : ...there "brain" in "Atkins", either
giggler : don't make a cd and sell it )
Romero : Yes, i am the ancient one.
Autolycus : Romero: what are their steps (if any) when deciding on an initial layout for a level? What do they strive to include/exclude in terms of environment?
Romero : I don't know what Hipnotic does when designing levels. :)
levelord : easy, john, easy!
Autolycus : sorry...replace "their" with "your"
ParadoX : We usually look at what Romero had done, and dont do that. :)
giggler : heheh
levelord : LOL!
Autolycus : heh
Romero : Then why does the first map in Scourge look like my Base maps? Hmmm....
Autolycus : hehe
Autolycus : Romero: The 'SuperSecret' in Quake, with the red logo, and 'TC - TW' written under it, whats it all about, who are the people, and what is the logo?
giggler : oooh
sCary : uhoh
levelord : time to dance, girls!
Romero : I CREATED THE BASE MAPS! REVEL IN MY BASE GRAPHICS!
ParadoX : Romero: Ummm..
Romero : Sorry.
giggler : Romero: a little cutting and pasting never hurts
Autolycus : hee hee
ParadoX : I MADE EM BETTER!! MUAHAHAHA
ParadoX : oops
Loki : Levelord: "The Lost Mines" has been an extremly popular level.... did you anticipate it would be that great of a level when building it.
giggler : I think sCary is gonna die of a laugh attack over here
Romero : The super secret is the Raven logo from Tim Willits, who created the Raven levels. The TW stands for Tim Willits and TC is the name of his sister, i believe (she helped)
ParadoX : Richard always knows his levels will be great
levelord : loki: never really think of the audience in that way, I just do the level, ya know
levelord : easy, tom, easy!
ParadoX : levelord is modest - we all know his stuff rocks :)
levelord : what are you setting me up for now, paraone
Loki : Okay.. Everyone: How long does it take you to create a level.... an how long do you spend a day editing ?
levelord : ...go on, do it!
ParadoX : uhh...
ParadoX : hehe
Romero : When i saw Scourge of Armagon, i was rocked down. It was the most amazing piece of level design i've seen in any game up to this point. I must learn from them.
ELM-Somberfire : I agree romero :)
* ParadoX blushes
levelord : soon, my son, soon
levelord : soon you will learn the ways
* Romero slaps Romero around a bit with a large trout
levelord : loki: sorry, we went off, didn't we... ...I'd say a week or two of 12 hour days
Loki : So, a 12 hour day is normal for you guys... how much of that involes playing quake ?
Loki : :)
Romero : About 5 hours. Oh, you mean Hipnotic? I don't know.
levelord : never played the game, myself
levelord : has anyone ever played Duke Nukem? ...oh, sorry
Loki : Alright.. another big one ... What can we expect next from Hipnotics new pack ?
giggler : we aren't making another pack
levelord : tits!
giggler : the next pack is being made by Rogue Entertainment
levelord : ...oh, I am sorry
giggler : we are making a game
levelord : ...was that out loud?
giggler : haha
giggler : levelord, wake up!
sCary : control yurself rich.. jeeze... we have probs with him sometimes...
Loki : Romero: And for you... Ion Storm is planning on putting out a number of new games... will they be as 'open' and easily user-modifiable. ?
Loki : Maybe I should of asked : What sort of new product can we expect from Hipnotic ? :)
levelord : tits!
ParadoX : lots of tits
levelord : ...shit!
sCary : tits rule
giggler : maybe a few breasts..
levelord : ...what was the question?
levelord : ...oh ya...
giggler : well, make that an even # of breasts
levelord : ...we're doing another 3D immersion
levelord : ....with tits!
ParadoX : We have some increidble stuff planned, I just WISH I could talk about it :)
* sCary nods
levelord : don't tell `em about the glasses, tom!
ParadoX : levelord: shhhh
Loki : You guys have probably seen a lot of levels that have been released on the net... What advise can you give people who want to attract the attention of the gaming markets...
levelord : spend more time!
giggler : Stop making quality levels, I want to keep my job. <g>
levelord : most of the internet stuff is wayyyy toooo simple
Loki : levelord: can you be more specific maybe? More time on what aspects in particular ?
ParadoX : focus on doing stuff that only has one room, with all the monsters in it..:)
levelord : so, gig, noone's told you yet about coming in early tomorrow?
Loki : Romero: We'd love to hear you input on this one, as another prospectice employer :)
Loki : "prospective"
giggler : levelord: hmm, earlier than the regular 4:00 Am.. thats kinda harsh
levelord : well, you won't need to stay long
giggler : oh, I get it :(
giggler : :)
levelord : ...just to pick up a piece of paper
levelord : ...pink paper
ParadoX : hahaha
levelord : don't laugh, mr kansas
giggler : hehe, I'm bringing this computer home tonight to do some work, ok?
Loki : Alright.. another popular questions: what sort of comptuers do you guys work on.. ?
levelord : I've already got 4 computers now
levelord : pentiums
levelord : lot's o' RAM, though
Loki : regular old pentium 75s :)
levelord : ...tom, your keyboard is sticky, BTW
levelord : ...can you come in early, too, and wipe it off?
ParadoX : levelord: Will do
levelord : apreciated
levelord : ...or, as they say up north... ...appreciated
Loki : How long, on these big 'ol pentiums of yours does it take to fully QBSP/Light/VIS a level ?
levelord : loki: levels with wide open areas can take 12+ hours for VIS
levelord : ...john's maps go for about 5 minutes, though
giggler : heh
Loki : Levlord: Another popular questions for you... how *DO* you manage those big areas with the vis problems and high r_speeds ?
Loki : with"out" :)
levelord : sure, I tell you, you tell a friend,... ...and then I got no job!
levelord : ...it just takes time to build them slowly and watch for the first signs of framerate disaster
levelord : ...and you have to be a god
levelord : ...a humble god
levelord : ...and incredibly good-looking, humble god
Loki : Okay... Giggler, Paradox: You guys have been quiet :) what do you guys HATE about editing ? the one part you with you could just make levelord do :)
levelord : ya, tell `em, mike!
giggler : well, aside from what we already make him do, I wish we didn't have to place ents for multiple skill levels
giggler : it makes for a hell of alot of playtesting
levelord : ...and don't forget all the mopping and sweeping
levelord : it's a real hell over here
ParadoX : loki: Ummm..
ParadoX : loki: getting lightsourcing to look right is kinda tough at times.
levelord : framerate!
Romero : Later guys! Gotta go kick some NaTaS ace!
levelord : later, john
Romero : Bye guys. See ya soon!
ParadoX : later john
levelord : everyone say "bye-bye"
item_ben : "bye bye"
ParadoX : "bye-bye"
levelord : ...okay, now wave
ELM-Somberfire : Bye John :)
Loki : okay.. I think I'm going to finsih off here :)
Loki : Clannet just can't seem to handle the load we're putting on it.
levelord : we won't invite john next time
Loki : I'd like to thank the hipnotic guys for comming out, and putting up with everything :)
item_ben : ya.. him and his big mouth
Loki : Anything you guys want to say before you de-moderate the channel ? :)
Loki : ..and let hell break lose ? :)
giggler : actually, I really wish sCary would shut up..
levelord : this was a blast, loki, thanks to y`all
levelord : let `em rip
item_ben : giggler: ya, him and his big mouth
Loki : REember everyone: If you have any OTHER editing questions... Levelord is our "guru" on the worldcraft page at planetquake.. Send you're questions there and he'll give you some of his advice.
ParadoX : item_ben: uhh
giggler : sCary I wrote something for you.. its kind of obscene but here goes:
giggler : --paradox is the BSP p1mp
giggler : --romero is a quad wh0re
giggler : --level0rd is the mountain p1mp
giggler : --sCary is a wh0re
item_ben : giggler: you forgot to say "llama" and "w00d"
* sCary spreads em
ParadoX : --giggler is the Nice car wh0re
