Sprite Explorer

(January 26, 2018)

Obsolete

"I swear r_speeds are still relevant—"

Sprite Explorer has some issues with more modern BMP files, such as the ones exported by Photoshop, known as BMP4 files. The more modern Half-Life Texture Tools doesn't have these issues, so try that if you experience any glitches.

Sprite Explorer is a viewer and compiler for GoldSrc-format sprite files. Built for ease of use, Sprite Explorer has the ability to view information about the sprite's format, dimensions, world origins, and the individual frames of the sprite itself. It can read SPR files from both the general game files and from PAK files.

Using Sprite Explorer, new sprites can be compiled from scratch or from existing QC files. A wizard exists within the program to walk the user through the creation of a new sprite. Sprites can also be exported back out to QC scripts or to animated GIFs, and individual frames can be exported to a variety of common image formats.

Sprite Explorer comes with an HTML manual detailing the UI of the program, as well as how to create new sprites with it.
